It is essentially an Ulster name. It occurs in Co. Antrim in the “census” of 1659 as MacPhetrish; and MacPhatricks which is also there is probably a variant of the same name not of MacPatrick (q.v. infra). From Co. Antrim, too, came Lieut. MacPhedris and his relative William MacFetrick, two of the defenders of Derry at the siege of 1689. Woulfe distinguished between MacFettridge (Mac Pheadruis) and MacFetrick, which he makes MacPhadraic: They are, however, usually synonymous. MacFettridge is numerous to-day in Counties Antrim and Derry but not elsewhere.
