McGarahan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This family (Mag Aracháin in Irish) belonged originally to Lisgoole in Co. Fermanagh-an ecclesiastical family according to Woulfe; it has since moved southwards and westwards and is now mainly found in the adjacent counties of Cavan and Leitrim and also in Roscommon. As early as 1577 we find Owen MacGaraghan in a Co. Galway Fiant, but as he was a kern he was not necessarily a native of that county. The prefix Mac is fairly often retained with this name. Birth registrations indicate that it is also spelt Garahan, Garaghan and Garraghan, with and without the Mac.
