McGawe Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCAW, Macgaw: The same as Macadam, but from an earlier Gaelic form of the personal name, Gaelic M'Adhaimh, 'son of Adam.' Adam in Gaelic is Adhamh, and in the phonetically written Fernaig Manuscript (1688) it is written Ahu (Rel. Celt., lI, p. 38), and in the still earlier Dean of Lismore's MS. (c. 1512) Awjoe (j here = y). Drumboy was let to Donald McCawe or Makkaw in 1481, and in 1487 he is recorded as dead (ER., IX, p. 585,637). Patrick and John Makcaw had precept of remission 'pro interfectione quondam Johannis Makcornok ' (RSS., I, 1487). John Makcaw was familiar servitor to King James V (SBR., p. 267), and archdeacon of the cathedral church of Lismore, 1547 (Laing, 528; Patrick, Statutes Scot. Church, p. 88). Donald McCaw Voyll was fined for reset of members of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 634), and in 1662 Alison Makca is in record in Edinburgh (Edinb. Marr.). There was an old family of this name in Bute. In 1506 Gillenow M'Kaw had a grant of the lands of North Garrochach, Gilpatrick MakKaw had half of the lands of South Garrochach, and John MakKaw the other half (RMS., II, 2987). Gilpatrick Makcoe of Dwngull Bute, is in record, 1534 (ibid., III, 1378). Patrick McKaw and Isobell More McKaw his wife were charged with witchcraft in Bute in 1662 (HP., III, p. 10, 11). In 1696 Gildow MacCaw was Commissioner of Supply for Bute (APS., X, p. 29). James Brown McCaw (17721846), of Scots parentage and educated in Edinburgh, ranked as the leading surgeon of eastern Virginia. By the beginning of the nineteenth century the name of the Bute family had become Mackay, "Mac" has been also dropped and Caw, q. v., is a present-day surname. M'Aw 1675, M'Cail 1649, M'Cawe 1636, Maccawe 1607, M'Kau, Mackaw, and Makkcae 1506, Mackawe 1625, Makaw 1534. Maccaa is a current spelling of the name in Galloway. (2) A money allowance was made for Johannes filius Donecani Makehou, 'obsidis, ' in 1300 (Hist. Docs., II, p. 427), and shortly after his death in Carlisle prison is noted (Bain, II, 1179). This name is probably from the same source as the above.
