MACGEACHAN, Macgeachen, Macgachan, Macgachen, Macgechan, Macgeachin, MacGauchane: Variants of Maceachan, which see. Roland MacGaghen of Wyggeton rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, a, p. 198). In 1377 Morice M'Gaychin and others had a safe conduct at request of Archibald Douglas, lord of Calloway (Stodart, II). The lands of Callones in Galloway were pledged to Fergus M'Gachyn, 1460 (ER., VII, p. 7), and Fergus Makgachyn appears as witness in Wigtown, 1490 (RMS., II, 2056). Johnne McGachyn was witness in St. Andrews, 1463 (CMN., 34), and Johannes McGaichan, witness in Irwin, 1499 (Simon, 35). "Sir" James M'Gauchane was presented to the rectory of Kilblane, 1538 (RMS., III), and D Joh. M'Gachand appears as witness in Ayrshire, 1536, and as chaplain and notary, 1540 (RMS., III, 1562, 2280). As Sir John M'Gathan, notary public in Irvine, 1540, he appears again in 1542 as Makgaithane, and in the same year as Makgathane and MacGaithan he is described as rector of Kilblane (Irvine, I, p. 173,183, 196,201).
