McGiveney Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Variants of this Co. Cavan name, also seldom found elsewhere, are MacEvinney, MacAvinue, MacGivena, Magivney etc. In the Annals of Loch Cé it appears as Mac Dhuibhne, in the person of Mathew MacGivney, Bishop of Kilmore, from 1286 to 1307, who they state, died in 1314. The Four Masters give his name as Maguibhne; later they mention two other ecclesiastics as MacDhuibhne, John, archdeacon of Drumlahan, 1343, and Farsithe (d. 1464) as Bishop of Kilmore, though the Handbook of British Chronology points out that he died without provision or consecration. MacDuibhne is the form used in Irish today. As Mac Avynny it is given in the “census” of 1659 as a principal Irish name in Co. Ferrnanagh. A notable modern member of the sept was Michael Joseph MacGivney (1852-1890) of Connecticut, son of an Irish exile, who founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882.
