MACGLASHAN, Macglashen, Macglasson: From Gaelic M'Glaisein, a diminutive form of M'Ghille ghlals 'son of the grey lad.' Mulmory M'Glassen in the Black Isle, 1500 (Rose, p. 169). Iain McGalssan or McGlassane was witness at Ardgartene, 1515 (HP., IV, p. 24, 25). John M'Glassan witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1519 (Lamont, p. 34), as also did Cristin M'Gillecallum M'Glassen in 1525 (ibid., p. 36), and Paul M'Glassen is in record in Lochalsh in 1548 (RMS., IV, 204). Several M'Glassanes were among those massacred at Dunavertie in 1647 (HP., II, p. 257), David McKglashen was reported to the presbytery of Inverness in 1681 as a "Saboth braker in the parochin of Croy" (IDR., p. 102), and John McGlassone was hurgess of Banff in 1710. Several Macglashans who settled in the Lowlands are said to have Anglicized their name into Gray. The name is also current in the curtailed form Glashen. See also Macgilleglas.
