MACGORRIE, Macgorry: Gaelic MacGoraidh, 'son of Goraidh.' Goraidh, earlier Gofraidh is a borrowing from ON. Gudrodr (for earlier Gudfrodr). Goraidh or Gorrie is a common name in the West Highlands, especially among the Macdonalds of Skye and the Macleods. The family of Macgorrie is descended from Goraidh or Godfrey, youngest son of "the good John of Isla," Lord of the Isles, who died in 1380. Duncan M'Goffry, a knight of John de Ergadia (Argyll) in 1315 appears in the following year as Donekan de Makoury and in 1319 he appears again as Sir Dungan Mac Gofferri (Bain, III, 479,521). (2) The Macgorrie Lamonts of Knockdow are descended from Goire an tighearn ruadh, Godfrey the red baron, lord of Inverchaolain, who flourished c. 1430 (McKechnie, The Lamont Clan, p. 418). Archibald, earl of Argyll granted a charter to his servitor John Makgorre of Knokdwff, 1540 (Lamont Inv., p. 49), and Parlane McGorrie in Ardes was fined for aiding Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV. p. 644). Allaster M'Gorrie and Allane M'Gornie appear in the muster roll of the laird of Glenurquhay, 1638 (BBT., p. 398399). M'Gorie 1611, McGorre 1540.
