McGrandle Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCRINDLE, Macchindell: This surname, found in Ayrshire and Galloway, is a form of Macbanald, which see. Dungall M'Kyrnele de Barnele witnessed a charter of the lands of Burghjarg in the sheriffdom of Wigtown in 1489 (RMS., II, 1884), and in 1505 we find recorded a precept of remission to Dougall Makrynnyll de Barneill (RSS., I, 1090), the same individual probably. Sir Duncan M'Krenele was chaplain in Crossraguel Abbey in 1523 (Crossraguel, I, p. 72), and about 1526-28. as Duncan Makrinnyll, he figures in a trial of Kennedys for the slaughter of Robert Campbell and others. Malcome McRyndill, James McCrynnell, William McCrunnell, and Andro Makcrunnell, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder committed by them in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386), and in 1530 Malcolme McCrendill was included with others in a letter of protection by King James v (ibid., II, 642). James McCrynnill of Barneile appears in record in 1541 (ibid., II, 3889) and Kentigern McCrynnill in Carrick in 1557 (ER., XIX, p. 416). James M'Crynnill of Barnele granted a charter in favor of his son, Kentigern M'Crynnill of the lands of Barnele and Drummurchie in Carrick in 1544 (RMS., III, 3025), and Robert Boyd of Trochrig was served heir in 1608 of the lands of Trochrig and the five mark lands of Berneile, M'Cryndill, and Snaid (Retours, Ayr, 99). In 1616 Sir John Kennedy of Barneolin was served heir of his father's lands of Balterssane and Knockrinnellis (i.e. M'Crindle's hill), and forty years later John Kennedy of Culzeone was served heir of his father in the same lands of Beltersone and Knokronald (ibid., 134,483). The place called M'Cryndle (1608), Knockrinnehis (1616), and Knokronald (1656) is now known as M'Crindleston or Macrindleston. The early forms of the name are evidence that long previous to 1608 the M'Crindles lived there and gave their name to the place. The spelling of 1656 points to Ronald or Ranald being the origin of the name, and we know that there were Rannalsounes in Ayrshire who may have come from a common stock-Clanranald Bane of Largie in Kintyre. The Ronalds of the Bennals, near Tarbolton, were probably connected. Loch Inch Crindle in Galloway may have received its name from one of this family. M'Crindill 1542, M'Crynnell 1544, M'CrynnoIl 1545. MacCrynell, MacCrynill, MacChrynnell, MacGrindal, MacGrundle.
