User-submitted Reference
Like many other Irish surnames, McGrory is the anglicized form of its Gaelic origin. It originally appeared in Gaelic as Mac Ruaidhri, which means 'son of Rory'. It was first recorded in the ancient territory of the O'Neills, now in the Province of Ulster, Central Northern Ireland, where they held a family seat and were regarded as chiefs since ancient times. It should be noted that this surname has dug its roots deep in the Country of Scotland, and many families who have this name claim Scottish descent over Irish. This has been a recurring matter of debate, and the surname is sometimes considered as being "Scots-Irish".
