MACKIRDIE, Mackirdy, Macgurdy: These surnames are common in the islands of Arran and Bute. In 1506 Gilcrist Makwrerdy held the lands of Bransar in Bute (Hewison, II, p. 174), and Finlay Makvreirdy had sasine of Brothok there in the same year (ER., XII, p. 720). Donald Makwrarty of Birgadulknok appears in 1534 (RMS., III, 1376); several M'Urartys appear as witnesses in Bute in 1540 (ibid., 2583); and Sir James M'Wartye, a Pope's knight, appears as vicar of Kingarth in Bute, 1554 and 1556. The latter's name, according to Hewison, is also spelled M'Verrit. James Makilveritie, chaplain in the chapel of S. Michael the Archangel in Rothesay Castle, between 1590-1600, appears in the Exchequer Rolls as McQuhirertie, McQuhirirtie, McQuheritie (these three spellings in 1596), McIliquharartie (1598), and Makquhirrirtie (1600). Patrick M'Varthic was portioner of Stravanan, Bute, 1622 (Retours, Bute, 29); and Donald M'Urarthie in Kelspok is in record, 1662 (Isles). Donald M'Vurarthy sold his portion of Bruchog (the Brothok above) in 1706 (Hewison, II, p. 174). Donald M'Curthy appears in South Garrachty in 1663 (Isles), and Mr. James Currie or M'Curdie (1790-1887) was minister of Kilbride in Arran (Fasti). Flaithbertach mac Murcertaigh, 'princeps Duincaillden' (i.e. Dunkeld) obiit 873 (AU., s.a.). The name is occasionally cited in the Icelandic Sagas as Myrkjartan, the name of an Irish king (Landnamabok, 2, 18); more correctly as Myrkjartag in the Norwegian codex Fagrskinna (p. 158). As Myrjartak it occers in the Agrip (Compendium) of Noregs Konunga Sogum (li. 7, ed. 1929). The modern Gaelic is M'Urardaigh, from early muircheartach, 'sea-ruler,' or 'sea-director' (muir, sea, and ceartach, ruler, director).
