From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACHARG: In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries this name was common in Carrick and in the mountainous part of Galloway adjoining, and today is common in Glasgow. There were two branches of the family-Machargs of Shalloch in the parish of Kirkpatrick-Irongray, and the Machargs of Cardorkan in the parish of Minnigaff. The Machargs or M'Quhargs of Cardorkan seem to have been of a turbulent character. Finlay M'Quharg and others of the name were charged with fire raising, burning of houses belonging to Stewart of Fintillauch in 1581 (RPC., III). Eleven ears later they took an active part in a feud between the M'Kies and other Galloway families and the Kennedys. Marion M'Quharge was married in 1493 (Sc. Ant., III, p. 107).

Thomas McQuharg was heir of Thomas McQuharg in lands in Barchclye, 1572 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 401). Martin M'Quharg was burgess of Kirkcudbright, 1597 (RMS., VI, 5790, John M'Quharg petitioned against the Service Book in 1637 (RPC., 2. ser. VI, p. 711), and James M'Quharg was bailie of Minigaff, 1715 (Wigtown). Margaret Machharge was charged with being a disorderly person (i.e. non-conforming) in the parish of Cross-Michael, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 574). Jean M'Harg in Troquhan, 1713 (Kirkcudbright). McGarg, Maharg, McQuharg, Harge, all 1684 (Parish). M'Carg.
