From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
MACHARRIE, Macharry: Galloway names, from Irish Mac Fhearadhaigh, a variant form of Mac Fearadhaigh, 'son of Fearadhaigh,' an old personal name, Olr. Feradach. Hogs McCharry, yhounger, Jhon McCharry and Edwart McCharry were guild brethren of Ayr in 1428 (Coll. AGAA., I, p. 228-229). In the following year Edwanl M'Hany had a charter of the lands of Knockinnschoch in the earldom of Carrick (RMS., II, 138). In 1449 the name again appears in Carrick as M'Carry (ibid., II, 371), and in 1455 there is entry of sasine of Knoknunscheach in Carric to Patnc Macquarry (ER., VI p. 74). Maurice M'Carry had sasine of Knocldnfeith in Carrik, 1468 (ER., VII, p. 675). Colin McQuhany is in record in Ayrshire in 1480 (ADC., II, p. 70). John M'Harie, an exiled Covenanter, was drowned on the voyage to the colonies off Orkney, 1679 (Hanna, II, p. 253). Anglicized Carrie and perhaps Henry. McCharrie and McHarrie 1684.
User-submitted Reference
In the Ulster dialect of Irish, the Scottish pronunciation of the name (mahk-hah-ree) means 'a plain', or according to an Irish-speaker in Donegal, a 'sandy place near the sea'. Several Ulster towns have names based on this Irish word. Y chromosome DNA tests link the spellings above, and suggest an Ulster origin. South-west Scotland was invaded and colonized by an Ulster tribe about 800 years ago and this appears to have included the paternal ancestors of this family.
