The surname originates in Ireland and comes from an Anglicisation of the Old Irish 'Aodh' to 'Hugh', the original surname having been 'Mac Aodh' literally meaning 'Son of Fire' became 'M(a)cHugh'. Its thought that the name is to have originally been that of either Manx or Norse settlers in Ireland and its known that the family once had land holdings in Connacht as well as later in Ulster.
