MACILHATTON: Gaelic Mac Gille Chotain, 'son of (S.) Catan's servant.' Catan, a saint of whom little is known, was honored on the West Coast from Bute to Skye. We have Kilcattan in Bute and in Colonsay, Kilchattan in Luing and gigha, Ardchattan, and in Skye a cell of the Abbey of Inchaffray was said to have been previously a residence of S. Catan. Ewen M'Gillecattan and Neil M'Gilhecattan witnessed a Lamont charter in 1465 (Lamont Inv., p. 19). Donald Mdlchattan in Clonarie, 1620 (Sastnes, II, 81). Patrick McIlhatten or McHilhattin was mortally wounded in Arran, 1672 (Just. Rec., II, p. 85), and John M'llhatton is in record in Foulis, 1670 (Dunblane). Lachlan Mc ilchatan, rebel in Saddell paroch, Kintyre, 1685 (Commons, p. 3). Jannet Mdlchattan in Inveraray, 1758. The surnames Hatton, Heaton, and Hutton, as current in Kintyre and other parts of Argyllshire, are abridged forms of this name. Makilhattane 1579.
