MACILVRIDE, Macilvreed: This name, which occers mainly in Perthshire, is from Gaelic M'llbhrid, an old form of Macbride, the full form of which is Mac Gille Brighde, 'son of the servant of (S.) Bride.' Colanus McGilbride in Moray had a remission in 1363 (REM., p. 164), and Columba Mac Giliabridi was rector of Srathwatardail in 1429 (Pap. Lett., VIII, p. 100). The archdeacon of the Isles in 1476 was Nigel M'Ylwyrd, and in 1478 as Nigel Makkilbreid he appears as archdeacon of Sodor (RMS., II, 1277, 1449). The name occurs in the lordship of Doune, c. 1489—90, as Makilbred, Makgilbred, and M'Gilbrid. Muldone Mdlbreid was tenant in Tiree, 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 614), Duncan M'Gillebreid is in record in Lochalsh, 1548 (RMS., IV, 204), Gillecallum Mc olvrad, tenant of Leckamore, 1669 (HP., IV, p. 222), John M'lllbreyd in Barnakill, 1672 (HP., II, p. 209), and Donald M'llbreid in Campbeltoun, 1689 (Argyll Inv. ). Mc ilbryd 1685, Mc ylbride 1513.
