MACKIMMIE, Macimmey, Macimmie: Gaelic MacShimidh, 'son of Simon' (Simmie), of old Mack Himy. Lord Lovat, chief of the Frasers, was so styled patronymically by the Gaels. Fraser narrating the birth of Simon Fraser (1570) says of the name Simon: "A name pretty rere in Scotland, south or north, although kindly to this famely, being the first name it had, and hence the Lord Lovat is called M'Khimy" (Wardlow, p. 160). The patronymic is probably derived from the Simon Fraser killed at Halidon Hill in 1333. In 1506 King James IV granted in heritage to Ewin Makkymme the half of Lepinquhillin in Bute and to John Makkymmie the other half (RMS., II, 2987). These Makkymmes may have been the sons of Symon M'Watt who is in record in 1499. (RMS. wrongly spells the name M'Kynine and Makkynine.) Sym Mak hymme is recorded as one of the assize concerning the lands of Garntulie in 1529 (Grandtully, I, p. 69). The name also occers as Mak Kymmy in the remarkable letter addressed to Henry VIII of England by John Elder, 'Reddschancke,' in 1542 or 1543 (Collp, 28). Johannes MacKymmey appears in Murthlac in 1550 (Illus, II, p. 262). Duncan Makymmie and James Macfinlay Makemy gave their bond to Duncan Campbell of Glenurquhay in 1586 (BBT., p. 240). Farcuhard M'Kymmie was retoured heir of Archibald M'Kimmie in the lands of Levinchulling in Bute in 1609, and in 1662 his son was retoured heir in the same lands as Ferquhard M'Kynnie (Retours, Bute, 19, 63). Andrew McKimmie and John McKimmie were fined in 1641 for reset of outlawed members of Clan Gregor (RPC., 2. ser. VII, p. 489). John M'Kimmy appears in Inermerky, 1716 (SCM., IV, p. 169). Macldmmie may have been in some instances Englished as Simson or Simpson. See Maccamie.
