From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACINDEOR, Mackindewah, Mackinder: Gaelic Macindeoir, 'son of the Dewar, ' q. v. The Macandeoirs were a sept formerly in Glassrie and now in Lochow. Their ancestor, says Buchanan, went to Argyllshire with Walter, laird of Buchanan's daughter, who, in the reign of James m was married to Campbell of Arndkinglas. 'in regard there was no other of his Surname in that Country Argyllshire, was thence termed Deoir, or a Sojourner, whence his Posterity were termed M'Andeoirs' (Buchanan, p. 140). Perhaps so, but Buchanan cannot always be depended upon. Colin Macindoyr was juror on an inquisition on the lands of Inchesturphyn in the thirteenth century (RD., p. 222). Gillaspy McIndewir was tenant of Ardtalloch, Islay, 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 635). John Makindewer (Makeandewer, Makindeora, or M'lndeora) in Portbane, witness to bonds of manrent, 1576-86 (BBT., p. 221-237). Allaster Moir M'lndeir, servant to Alexander Steuart in Auldverik, to answer to charge of violence and robbery, 1592 (RPC., V, p. 28). Sir H. J. Mackinder was author of Britain and the British seas, 1914. The M'Indeors or Dewars of Islay often call themselves Macarthurs. M'Doir (with omission of the article) 1672, Mdnder 1613, Mcnddeor 1686, Mc Indoer 1692, M'lndoir 1684, M'Yndoir 1560.
