MACJAMES: 'son of James.' A Highland border surname. Some of this name are probably descended from James Robertson of Strowan, who flourished early in the sixteenth century. About the same date the Robertsons of Pittagowan were called M'William. Alexander McJames was member of an assize on the lands of Garntulie in 1529 (Grandtully, I, p. 69), Johannes McJamis doy was a parishioner of Duthil in 1537 (Grant, III, p. 268), and William McJames was a 'teilzeoer in Innemes' in 1602 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 2).-McJames, son to Johnne McJames in Kandlocht, was declared rebel in 1619 (RPC., XII, p. 78), Doncan McKjames is in record in 1682 (IDR., p. 106), and John McJames alias McHenish in the regality of Kildrummie was fined in 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 439).
