In 1506 Finlay Makcaill was recorded as of Dunawhunt, Bute, and John M'Kaill was retoured heir to his grand-uncle's son Gilnow M'Kaill, in the third part of Ballecaule, Bute, 1575 (Retours, Bute, 7).

MACKAIL, Mackale, Mackell, Maccale: Gaelic MacCathail, 'son of Cathal,' which see. The MacCaills or MacCalls were an old Bute family. Finlay Macchaell was bailie of Rothesay in 1501. In 1506 Finlay Makcaill was recorded as of Dunawhunt, Bute, and John M'Kaill was retoured heir to his grand-uncle's son Gilnow M'Kaill, in the third part of Ballecaule, Bute, 1575 (Retours, Bute, 7). Stephen Makaill appears in 1513 as servitor of the abbot of Arnbroath (RAA., II, p. 541), and Sydoc McCaill is in record, 1540 (RSS., II, 3334). Johnne M'Caill was reidare at Sorby, 1574 (RMR.). Donald McCael witnessed sasine of lands at Duntrune, 1651 (Genealogist, new ser. XXXV, p. 230). William M'Quhaill in Ayr is doubtless an aspirated form of the name. Hugh M'Kail the martyr, 1640. A family of the name gave name to McKaill's land and Fauld Kaill in Rothesay. M'Caell 1663. See also Macall.
