From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACANDIE, MaCandy, Maccandie, M'Kandy: (1816). Of twofold origin. (1) A Highland border name, Mac(Sh)anndai, from Lowland Scottish 'Sandy.' (2) A small sept in the island of Bernann 'Ic Anndaidh or 'Ic Anndal. The sept, according to the late Dr. Alexander Carmichael, consists of only a few families (Carmina Gadelica, II, p. 313). The name here is from the Old Norse personal name Andi. In the local folklore the long-tailed ducks are held to be enchanted Macandies. John McHandie was tenant under Andro Monro of Newmore, 1580 (RPC., III, p. 319), and perhaps M'Chandwe in Inverness, 1556 (Laing, 638), is the same name. Johnne McKande was a follower of Walter Ross of Morange, 1596 (RPC., V, p. 304), and Gilcallum McSagart Makcandy and Jhone Murdowsone Makcandie were followers of Murdow McCIoyd in the attack on the galley of the laird of Balcomie in 1600 (RPC., XIV, p. cxxiii).
