McKeady Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Though there are some instances of the prefix O being used with this name, * it is and was normally Mac Céadaigh. In the sixteenth century Fiants, for example, for one O'Keddy we find 21 MacKeadys, MacKedaghs etc. Of these six are in Connacht (as is O'Keddy), two in Co. Longford, ten in or near Queen's County (Leix) and three in Munster. The last may well be of the once important Corcalaoidhe sept Ó Meicéidigh, a name which was corrupted to Mac Céidigh. The Leinstermen were followers of O'More or of the Fox; while those located in Connacht no doubt belonged to the MacKeady sept of Co. Galway. In 1635 Strafford's Inquisition of Co. Mayo found one MacKeady of note but no O'Keady or Keady. The prefix Mac had been dropped by 1793: in that year there were 34 Keady families in the single Co. Galway parish of Moycullen, none being called MacKeady or O'Keady. In modern times the name Keady belongs (apart from metropolitan Dublin) almost exclusively to Counties Galway and Mayo.

The surname Keady has no connexion with the town of Keady in west Armagh.

*The Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls, 1665, present an isolated example of O Kedagh, but this may perhaps be disregarded as the transcription of those rolls was not always accurate.

Mac Céadaigh The prefix Mac is now usually dropped. This name belongs mainly to Co. Galway. The name of the Corca Laoidhe sept Ó Meicéidigh has been corrupted to Mac Céidigh, so Keadys in Co. Cork are mainly of that origin. SIF 95
