MACKIEGAN, Mackeegan, Mackeggan: Gaelic MacAodhagain, 'son of Aodhagan,' a diminutive of Aodh. Mackiegans or Mackeegans are an old North Uist family, said to have come from Ireland c. 1600, but the name is found domiciled in the western Highlands before that date. Hew M'Kegane in Coill had a lease in 1567 of certain lands in this island for nineteen years (OPS., II, p. 834,836).
