MACHENDRIE, Machendrick, Machendry, Machenry, Mackendrick, Mackenrick: These ere Highland border names meaning 'son of Henry,' in Gaelic MacEanrutg. The d is intrusive as in Henderson, which has the same meaning and is used as an Englishing of the name. John M'Henri , lord of Koylyan, charter witness, c. 137080 (Laing, 64). Gilcrist Makhenry, tenant of Hidderbrigende and Drumquharagan in 1480 appears again in 1483 as M'Henri (ER., IX, p. 561,594). John McKanrig, probably his son, was tenant of Coschamby, Stragartna, in 1499, and appears again as John McCanrig or McCanrik, tenant of Drumquhargane, Strathgartney, in 1502 (ibid., XII, p. 416,634). Euar Makanry held a merkland of John Culquhone of Lus in Kilmun in 1497 (RMS.,II, 2385), and Gilbert Makcanryk, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Duncan McKinriche was tenant on lands in Strathdee in 1527 (Grant, III, p. 68), and Johnne M'Henry had a remission from Queen Mary for his part in assisting the English in burning the town of Dunnone and besieging the castle in 1546 (RSS.). In 1695 the earl of Argyll was retoured heir in a 'mercata terrae ab antiquo per Iver M'Canrie possessa' (Retours, Argyll, 93). Donald McCandrie and John McCandrie in Glaick and Duncan McHenrie in Knockbaine of Strathbren are in record in 1726 (HP., II, p. 332,338). The Henrys of Argyll and Bute are most probably originally Mackendricks. The names are also Englished Henry. McHenrik 1590, M'Kendrig 1669.
