MACERCHAR, Macfabquhar, Macteerchar, Mackercher, Mackeracher, Mackerracher, Mackerichar, Mackericher, Mackerricher: Gaelic Mac Fhearchair, 'son of Farquhar,' which see. Farquharson is the English rendering of the name. Malmur Mac hercar appears in the reign of William the Lion (Scon, p. 37). The lands of Lochman M'Kilcolim M'Erewer, Enegus McErewar, and others in Kintyre were erected into the sheriffdom of Kintyre in 1292 (APS., I, p. 91,447). Lawemund McGreghare (error for McEregere) and Annees (= Angus) son of Duncan McGregere (= McEregere) were summoned to do homage to King John Baliol, 1292 (ibid., p. 448). Macbain says (Skene, Highlanders, p. 413) Angus has been claimed as chief of Mackintosh though really head of the Lamonts. John filius Lagmanni filii Aecolmi (for Malcolmi) M'Ferchar, c. 1295. Yvar McFarchard, to whom a payment was made from the fermes of inverness in 1327, appears in the following year as Eugene McErchar (ER., I, p. 59, 93). In 1337 payment was made to Thomas, son of Ewary McFerchary in Moray (ibid., p. 440). Malcolm Makkarocher was tenant under the earl of Lennox, 1472. Donald McFarquhar, tenant of Drumnamark, Ardmanoch. 1504 (ER.. XII, p. 661). Feiquhardus KicOwne McArchare and Moricus McOwne McArchare were parishioners of Duthil, 1537 (Grant, III, p, 269). Gillechreist M'Kerracher in the Port of Lochtay was a Glenurquhay vassal, 1638 (BBT., p. 400). Alexander M'Kerquhar in Dinra, 1662 (Caithness), and Donald M'Archer in the parish of Callander in the same year (Dunblane). Angus M'Kerrichare and Paul M'Ean vic Errochar in Sheba were denounced rebels, 1675 (HP., I). John M'Erichar in Dale, 1677, and Gilbert M'Archer in Esdale, 1672 (Argyll). Several M'Kerchars or M'Kerchers were among the duke of Atholl's fencible men enrolled in Glenlyon, 1706 (HMon., III, p. 215-216). The Perthshire M'Kerachers are descended from Donald Farquharson who married a daughter of Patrick Duncanson or Robertson, first of Lude. The name also appears in old records as M'Carracher (M'Caiaher) and M'Carrower, abbreviated to M'Arar and M'Erar. Patrick M'Carquhar in Drungy, 1547 (Dunblans).
