From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACKERRAL, Mackerrel: Irish MacFhearghail, 'son of Fearghal,' a name which means 'super choice.' An old surname in Ayrshire. According to Paterson the first of the name in record is Sir John M'Kirel who distinguished himself at the battle of Otterburne, 1388. The name, however, is found earlier. Recherus Mecmaccharil witnessed confirmation by Dunekan, earl of Karic of a charter by Roger de Scallebroc of lands in Carrik in the reign of William the Lion (Melros, p. 26), and as Radulfus Makerel witnessed a charter by Richard de Moreville of lands in Roxburgh to the Abbey of Melrose in the same reign (ibid., p. 95). Gilbert M'Corrill was a tenant under Douglas in the barony of Buittle, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lx). Gilbert Makcarole was tenant of the Grange of Ballyndune super Cree, 1481 (ER., IX, p. 583). Another Gilbert M'Carole, witness in Dumfries, 1534, appears again in 1541 as M'Carrule (RMS., III, 1418, 2603), and in same year as Makearrell, servant to William McGe of Balmage (RSS., II, 4155). William Makcarole, tenant of Balcrag, Wigtownshire, 1563 (ER., XIX, p. 512). William McKeirell, sheriff-clerk of Ayr, 1595, appears in two following years as McCarrell and McKenell (ER.). William M'Kerrell was retoured heir of William M'Keuell in Hilhous, his father, in the parish of Dundonald, 1630 (Retours, Ayr, 264). Neell McKerll, tenant of Nosbrig, Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 501). M'Carole 1583, M'Kerell 1602, M'Kirrell 1659, Makeirell 1643; Makcarall.
