McKerron Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
MACKERRON, Mackern: A shortened form of Macilheran or Macilherran, which see, a once common name, particularly in Rute. Gillepatrik Mc Kerin or Makerin held land in Lanarkshire in reign of Malcolm IV (Neubotle, p. xxxvi). M'Kerin is given as the name of the blacksmith traditionally credited with the construction of the celebrated cannon "Mons Meg" at Kirkcudbright in 1452. Joh. Makcherane, witness in Bute, 1519 (RMS., III, 1321). Grissel M'Kerron is in record in Chappeltown, Moray, in 1688.
A contraction of Mac Ciarain, ‘Ciaran’s Son.' The name Ciaran (ciar, 'mouse-coloured') was borne by one of the twelve great saints of Ireland, after whom a large number of Irish children were formerly named.
'St. Ciaran, son of the artificer, Abbot of Cluain-mic-nois, died on the ninth day of September', a.d. 548.
'Mac Ciarain, airchinneach of Sord', a.d. 1136.
This name may possibly be derived from Mac Carrg- hamha. (See Corooin.) It is probable that Karran has come to us through the Scandinavians, though, of course, they originally imported it from Ireland. Kjaran and Kvarran are not uncommon in Iceland, and Scandinavians in Ireland took the name Cuaran; hence its different form to Mylchraine and Craine, which see.
'"The Book of Leinster" says that Gormlaith was likewise mother of the Norwegian-Irish King Amlaff Cuaran (Olaf Kvaran); whilst the Irish chronicler, Dugald Mac Firbis, mentions this same Olaf KVARAN as married to Sadhbh (Save), a daughter of Brian Boru.' The form Carine is not common.
