MACKESSAN, Mackesson: 'son of Kessan,' which see. Gillecrist Mackessan was juror on an inquest in Lanarkshire, 1263 (APS., I, p. 102; Bain, I, 2338). Newyn Mackessan was one of the inquest which found that the daughters of the late Finlay of Campsie were the lawful heirs of deceased Dufgall, brother of Maldowen, earl of Lennox, 1271 (Red Bk, Menteith, II, p. 218). Finlay, son of Kessan the clerk, had a grant from Donald, earl of Levenax, c. 1350, of an annual payment from the lands of Ladlewin, in the parish of Killearn (Levenax, p. 60). Donald McKessane had a lease of half of Rranoquhalye, 1480 (ER., VIII, p. 562). Gilbert Makesayne in Cowall, 1631 (Sasines, II, 383). McKesone 1480, McKison 1717, M'Kysone 1663, Makkessane 1486.
