MACKILLICAN, Mackilligan, Mackilligin, Mackillicane, Macgilugin: Gaelic Mac Gill' Fhaolagain, 'son of the servant of (S.) Faolagan.' Faolagan is a diminutive of Faolan, itself a diminutive. compare Maclellan. The surname, not now common, is confined mainly to Ross and Moray. Thomas McKelegan, who was charged with having 'crewkit' his master's "hors in yokis, quhar throw he may nocht gang ane fyt' in 1561, is probably Thom or Thomas McKelecan who pleaded guilty in 1565 to having 'cassin dewattis (divots) vpon the ground betwix the schip and the cheppall yard wall' in Inverness (Rec. Inv., I, p. 59,127). John McGilligaaie in Ardosier and Andro McGilligain there, followers of William Mclntosche of Borland, and some others were to be apprehended for slaughter, 'open reifs, herships, firsraisings, and other crimes,' 1613 (RPC., IX. p. 558). John McGillican in Ardinscheir refused instruction in his craft of tanning, 1621 (RPC., XII, p. 491). The famous Covenanting minister of Fodderty, Rev. John M'Killican (d. 1689) is mentioned in the Brodie Diaries published by the Spalding Club in 1863 under the spellings M'Culican, M'Culicam, M'Culikam, M'Culigan, M'Culigin, M'Culikan, MCuliken, M'Gulican, M'Kelican, M'Kilican, M'Kilikin, McKillicane, M'Kulikan, and Makulikin. Elsewhere he is mentioned as M'Giligan and M'Clagine. Andro McKillican and others were ordered to find caution that none of them 'sail doe harme or skaith to any of the inhabitants' of Inverness, 1688 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 233-234). George H. D. M'Killigin from Forgue was killed in the first Great War (Turriff), M'Culligane 1631, McKillichane and McKilligane 1619, MacKilligin 1721.
