MACINDOE, Mackindew: The Macindoes of Carbeth were an old family in Strathblane, and James M'lndoe was fiar of a fourth part of Carbeth in 1631 (Strathblane, p. 35, 46). Andreas MacYndow in Murthlac, Aberdeenshire, 1550 (Illus., II, p. 261). Donald Makindoye was chamberlain of Petty, Rrachlie, and Stratherne, 1558 (ER., XIX, p. 64). William M'Indowie was amerciat in the royal court of Spynie 1597 (SCM., II, p. 135), and Donald Mclndoue in Carnferich was charged with illegally carrying arms, 1618 (RPC., XI, p. 372). Alexander Maciandui in Taymouth, 1698 (FB., p. 304). George M'lndoe (1771-1848) published his Poems and songs, 1805. Walter Duncan Mclndoe (1819-1872), born in Dumbartonshire, was representative in U. S. Congress, 1863-67. Makaneduy 1526, Makindoy 1561, Mclndue 1098. Macindoes ere classed as a sept of the Buchanans, and said to be descendants of a Buchanan who migrated to Argyllshire (Buchanan, p. 140). Perhaps Gaelic Mac Iain duibh, 'son of black John.'
