Robert M'Kynnell was retoured heir of Robert M'Kynnell, his father, in the 40d lands of old extent of Auehincreiche, Dumfriesshire, 1638 (Retours, Dumfries, 167). "The McKinnells and MacKinnons of Dumfriesshire come of an Highland Clan," and a family named McKynnell were tenants of the conventual lands of Bruntscairth prior to the Reformation, and there was quite a colony of them in the neighborhood (Edgar, p. 77,194). In 1684 (Parish) the name appears as: McKinnell, McKindell, McKindle, and shortened to Kinnell and Kindell.
