MACKINVEN: A surname at one time common in the west side of Kintyre. It is popularly but mistakenly believed to be a form of Mackinnon, but is really a Gaelic rendering of the well-known Ayrshire family name Love, introduced into Kintyre by persecuted Covenanters, to whom the peninsula was a haven of refuge. The Gaelic is MacIonmhuinn (in Kintyre Aclonmhuinn), which may be rendered 'beloved son.' Donald M'Invine in Mull was a Jacobite prisoner of the '45 (Prisoners, III, p. 106).
