McKitrick Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACKETTRICK, Macetterick, Macketterick, Mackitterick, Mackittrick: Variant forms of the same name all in curent use in Galloway. In Gaelic the name is spelled Mac Shitrig, 'son of Sitric' or 'Sitrig,' from the ON. personal name Sigtryggr, 'true victory.' The name being in the genitive in Gaelic causes the initial S to be lost by aspiration, and the k-sound of c carried over from Mac. The Annals of Ulster under the year 892 record great confusion among the Norsemen under the son of Imhar (= Ivar) and Sichfrith, and three years later is the entry: "Sit-riucc son of Imhar was slain by other Norsemen. ' John M'Kethirryke appears as tenant in 'Villa de Prestoun" in 1376 (RHM., I, p. Ixi). In 1460 the fine of John M'KittricK in Kirkcudbright was remitted (ER., VII, p. 5), and Thomas Makettrik and his heirs had a charter of the lands of Kelauch in Galloway in 1476 (RMS., II, 1256). John Mc Quhitrig witnessed a charter of amortization by Alexander Gillert, rector of Newlands, 1504 (Soltre, p. 325), and Patrick Makketrig in Galloway in 1529 had a respite for his "tressonable intercommonyng with Inglismen" (RSS,, II, 431). Robert M'Quhittroche in Culquha (Kirkcudbright) was a charter witness in 1643 (Laing, 2330), and John MacKit-trick and John Kittrick (without the 'mac') were residents in the parish of Rorgue in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 567). John M'Whitrock appears in Raentone, 1687 (Kirkcudbright). The name is also current under the form Munkittrick. Some of this name have changed to Ketteridge as 'more genteel' (Trotter). McKitrick 1641.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Woulfe describes this name both as rare and scattered; but in fact it is by no means uncommon within a comparatively limited area, viz the old territory of Oriel. Its homeland has always been the country centred around Counties Armagh and Monaghan. In the former county a peculiar synonym of the name, viz Hanson, * is hard to explain. MacKeterick, one of the numerous variant spellings of the name, occurs in an Ormond army list of 1648 as a trumpeter in Capt. Parsons's troop: nearly all the soldiers in it were English and perhaps this man was in fact a MacGetrick from Galloway in Scotland.

Alexander MacKitrick was one of the “tenant settlers” in the Clogher area under the Plantation of Ulster: most of the families in that settlement were Gaelic-Irish. The name is formed from the Norse personal name Sitric and it appears in a Judiciary Roll of 1306 dealing with Co. Waterford as MacShitteruk-in Irish it is Mac Shitric. An interesting fact is that Ketrick without the prefix Mac is associated with Westport, Co. Mayo, not with Oriel.

*For Hanson see p. 85 supra.
