MACCRAE, Maccrea, Maccree, Macrie: Ayrshire forms of Macrae, which see. A common old form of the name in Ayrshire was Makcrie (1586), and Makreith. (Cumnock, 1538). John Makcra was messenger in Ayr, 1621 (Ayr, p. 61). Robert McCrie was charged with being a disorderly person (i.e. non-conforming) in parish of Carsfern, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 575), and William McKrie was flesher in Dunbar, 1688 (ibid., XIII, p. 248). Allan McKree, 'surgan' in Ayr, was admitted burgess of Prestwick, 1733 (Prestwick, p. 91).
