MACCLANNACHAN, Macclanachan, Maclanachan, Macclanaghan, Maclanaghan, MacClenaghan: In Gaelic Mac Gille Onchon, 'son of the gillie of Onchu,' an Irish saint whose name means 'mighty hound' (Watson). The name is or was common in Galloway. Dugall and Patrick MakClennochquhen were convicted of hereschip in Carrick in 1513 (Trials, I, p. 88). Gilbert M'Clannochane appears in 1544—5 as occupant of the five mark lands of Craggis in the parish of Mochrum (RMS., III, 3163), and in 1546 there is entry of the escheat of Michael McClannochane (ALHT., IX, p. 12). Niniane M'Clennoquhan was reidare at Partoun, and John M'Clanochane reidare at Vchiltrie, Ayrshire, 1574 (RMR.). Decreet against Andro McClennoquhen in Clairend, 1577 (RPC., II, p. 647). Elizabeth McClannochane was retoured heir of John McClannochane in Keremanoche, her father, 1585 (Retours, Ayr, 736), and James M'Clanoquhen was heir of Alexander M'Clannoquhen in Ballinglah, 1645 (Inquis., 3061). James M'Lanoquhen in Culinan was a follower of Wchtrid McDougall of Frewche, 1635 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p, 524-525). The name has many forms in the old records: M'Clanachan, M'Clanochan, M'Clennaghan, M'Clinighan, M'Cleneghan, M'Clenaghan, M'Clenahan, M'Clenaghen, M'Clenighan, MacClenachan, MacClanahan, McClanaquhen, MacClennochan, MacClannochan, McClunochen, McKlanachen, M'Lanaghan, M'Lannachen, McLanochen, M'Lanoquhen, M'Lenechen, M'Lenochan, McLonachin, and M'Glenaghan (this last form is also found in Ulster, from Mag-). The name is also found in several forms without 'Mac.' Gave name to Baknacclannoquhen in Kyle (1553, RMS.), Balmaclanoquhan in Carrick (1653), and M'Clanochanstoun (1600), M'Clannochanstoun (1627), or M'Clonachstoune (1691) in Ayrshire. Onchu was the name of one of the victors in the battle of Cuil Corra, 649 (Chron. Scot.).
