MACCLINTOCK, Maclintock: Gaelic Mac Chill' Fhionndaig, commonly MacGilliondaig (for M'Ill'Fhionndaig), 'son ot (S.) Findan's gillie.' S. Findan was founder of the monastery of Clonard. Fintan, Fintoc (whence later Fionndoc), are diminutives of Finn, later Florin. M'Gillindak is author of a poem in the Dean of Lismore's Book. The name also occurs in the Kirk-Session records of Kenmore, Aberfeldy, in 1757 as M'llandick, M'lllandag, M'Illandick, M'Lentick (these four the same person). Another form in the same record is M'lllendaig (Christie, p. 16-18). Macllliuntaig, Macllintog. Some Maclintocks so early as 1611 are said to have Englished their name as Lindsay. On this Ailean Dall, in his poem to the Lochaber Volunteers in 1795, referring to a warrior from Glenara says:

"Ciamar theid na h-uaislean cruinn

Gun Lindsay 'bhith san airimh

Ga 'n ainm Cailean Macllliuntaig

Le thionndadh an Gaidhlig."

John M'lnlaintaig in Colgine, Kilbride 1693 (Argyll Inv.). James Mcillandaig was the last of the Breadalbane smugglers (FB., p. 364). M'Clintoch 1684, Mclnlintak 1692. The name of John Macilluntud, priest, of the diocese of Whiteherne, who petitioned for a benefice in the gift of the abbot and monastery of Paisley, 1394 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 619) is probably an error for Macclintock.
