McLiver Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACLIVER: An Islay surname. The old pronunciation was Macleever, the modern is Macliver. Probably Gaelic Mac CUT Ibhair, 'son of (S. ) Ibhar's gillie. ' A commission was granted Campbell of Auchinbrek and others in 1619 to apprehend Ewne M' Finla VcGillevir in Kilchoane, and John McEwne VcIlliver, who had been denounced rebels by Campbell of Barbreck (RPC., II, p. 643). John Roy M'Gilliver in Islay, 1686. Sometimes confused with Macclure, q. v. M'Ileur (in Islay) 1733. The above seems to give the line of descent of Colin, Lord Clyde: Colin, son of John, son of John, grandson of John Roy, son of John, son of Ewen, son of Finlay, son of Gillour. The derivation of the name from Mac a liomhair, modernized Mac illimheir, is an instance of popular but unscientific etymology.
