McLoy Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCLOY: Gaelic MacLughaidh, 'son of Lewie' (pet form of Lewis). The Maccloys of Bute and Arran are offshoots of the family of Fullarton of Fullarton in Ayrshire."Two sons went out of the house of Fullarton, one of the name of Lewis and the other James. Lewis went to Arran and was called McLewis or Mccloy he Acquired Lands in Arran holding of the Croun and was made Crouner of Arran" (Macfarlane, II, p. 343), and Martin says that the most ancient family in Arran "is by the Natives reckoned to be Mack Lowis" whose "surname in English is Fullarton" (W. I., p. 223). The name appears in 1472 as Maclow, in 1511 as M'Lowe, and in 1526 as M'Loy (Reid, Buie, p. 205). Donald Clowie or Makcloye was a witness in Cowell, 1537 and 1540 (RMS., III, 1677, 2146), and Gilbert MacLoy in Glendaruel was slain along with the Lamonts in the massacre at Toward, 1646. Rev. Donald M'Cloy was minister at Kilmodan, 1609, and his grandson was consecrated bishop of the non-jurant church in Edinburgh, 1705, and elected Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, 1720. The name is sometimes Englished Maclewis (G. Luthais). Some Gaelic writers thinking that Fullarton meant "fuller's town" render the name "son of fulling" (G. luaidh).
