McLugas Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACLUCAS, Maclugaish, Maclugash, Maclugish: Gaelic Mac Lucais, 'son of Lucas. ' Fergus M'Lucas was one of an inquisition held at Inverness on the lands of Dunmaglass in 1414 (Cawdor, p. 5), and a remission was granted to John Maklucas in 1524 (ibid., p. 147). Fynlay M'Lowkas witnessed an instrument of sasine of Craginche in 1493 (OPS., II, p. 97), and Donald Maclugash was a charter witness at Castle Lachlan in 1502 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 71). Gillepatric McLugas acquired the hill steading of Garrachoran in Glen Lean, 1618 (McKechnie, Lament, p. 140). Iain M'CIuglashe was one of those murdered at Dunavertie in 1647 (HP., II, p. 257), and the name is also found in Bute in 1656 (Hewison, II, p. 270). Patrick M'Clugeis was tenant of Over Ardrosketill in 1664 (Isles), and Donald Roy M'Lugas in Ardtounishever was denounced rebel in 1675 (HP., I). John McClugass in Kilchrenan and Ard: McLeougas in Nether Lorn appear in 1692 (Commons, p. 32, 34), Finlay M'Clugash in Knockimily, parish of Dunoon, is in record in 1696 (Argyll Inv. ), and John M'Lougas in Nether Fairnocn, parish of Kilchrenan, in 1698 (ibid. ). The latter appears again in 1702 as M'Laugas (Argyll). MacLucas and MacClucas are found in Cowal in the eighteenth century. Prof. Watson informs me that the duke of Argyll assures him that the old personal name Mac Gille mo Luaig has also become Lucas in Argyllshire. Many persons have dropped their name Maciucas and have become Macdougalls in the north and Douglases in the south, and in Coll Lucas and MacLugais are now Macdougall. In the Isle of Man the name is current as Clucas. Maclagan's etymology (Perth incident, p. 329330) of the name from luath (swift) and cas (foot) is erroneous. The Cowal Maclucases are reckoned a sept of the Clan Lamond. McGlugas 1692, McLucase 1609.
