MACMEEKEN, Macmeekan, Macmeekin, Macmedcan, Macmeickan, Macmeeking, Macmeckan, Macmichan, Macmickan, Macmicken, Macmicking, Mackmikan, Macmiken, Macmdein, Macmychen, and Macmeecham: All Galloway surnames. Probably from Irish MacMiadhachain ('son of Miadhachan'), which Woulfe (p. 392) Englishes MacMeechan, MacMeekan, MacMeekin, etc. Gillecrist Mak Makin or M'Maykin witnessed a charter by Roger de Scalebroc of lands in Carrie, c. 1185 (Melros, I, p. 25; RMS., II, 142), and Gillebride Macmehin witnessed confirmation of the charter by Dunekan, earl of Karic (Melros, I, p. 26). Duncan M'Maycan appears as witness in Wigtownshire, 1426 (RMS., II, 185), and the escheat of Finlai Makmakyn or M'Makin in le Rendis (Rhinns) is recorded in 1456 (ER., VI p. 195,208). Jenetta filia Makmechum sold a six markland of Kirkdale in the parish of Kirkmabreck in 1496 (M'Kerlie. IV, p. 249). Alexander McMychin was charged with preventing the sheriff from holding court in Wigtownshire in 1513 (Trials, I, p. 91), and in the same year as Alexander Makmechane he had a remission for mutilation committed by him (ibid., p. 92). Michell Makmakin in Ardeveill is in record, 1540 (RSS., II, 3666), and Thomas M'Meikin in Killentringane, 1671 (Inquis., 5409). John McMiken charged with being a disorderly person (i. e. non-conforming) in the parish of Rerrick, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 573). In 1684 the name appears (Parish) as McMeikin, McKmacken, McKmaken, McMecan, McMeckan, McMeikine, McMeikeine, McMeken, McMichan, McMickan, McMicken, McMickin, McMiken, and Mamiken.
