MACMAURICE: 'son of Maurice, ' q. v. According to Buchanan of Auchmar the name is derived from an illegitimate son of Maurice, second of that name, laird of Buchanan, in the reign of Robert I. Another sept of Macmaerices, from Maurice, illegitimate son of Walter, fourth of that name, laird of Buchanan, in the reign of James 111, Descendants of the latter are now Moneises or Morisons in Perthshire. In Buchanan's time a few Macmaurices in Buchanan parish still retained their ancient name (Buchanan, p. 138-139). Arthur filius Mauritii witnessed a charter by Eugen M'Kessan in favor of Celcstin M'Lachlan of part of the estate of Garchel in the reign of Robert m (Levenax, p. 76). MACMORICE: 'son of Maurice (or Morris )', q. v. Sir John Makmoris was rector of Kilmolroy in Arisaig before 1517 (OPS., II, p. 200). His name appears also as Makmwrich on the same page. Finlay McMoris in Auchynnar was a follower of the earl of Argyll in 1536 (RSS., II, 2152). Grissell Macmorice in Petdrichie, parish of Glenbervie is recorded in 1601 (Brechin), and John M'Mories in Over Rerrick in 1715 (Kirkcudbright). See also Macmaurice and Macvarish.
