MACMONIES, Macmonnies: This surname which occurs in the Stewartry, is a form of Macmenzies, q. v. "The careless way in which names were written and pronounced in early times makes the change of the vowel more than probable" (Dudgeon, p. 24). Thomas Makmynnes was burgess of Dumfries, 1567 (Edgar, p. 242; RPC., 1. ser. I, p. 567). James Makmunish and John Mack Munish were classed as disorderly persons in the parish of Cross Michael, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 574). John M'Monies in record in Carlingwark, 1789, appears again in 1791 as M'Minnies (Kirkcudbright). McMynneis 1558.
