MACMORLAND, Macmoreland: (this latter form recorded in Glasgow and Greenock). Woulfe explains this name, which occers in Ulster (and there "apparently of Scottish origin"), as MacMurghalain son of Murghal, ' sea valor. Alexander Macmorland, peruke-maker in Leith, 1749 (Lyon in mourning, II, p. 254), The name is recorded in Minnigaff in 1684 (Parish), and in Haddington, 1695. Dr. Macbain (Dictionary, s. v. Borlanachd) explains the name, erroneously I think, as a derivative from borlanachd, morlanachd (from English bordland), compulsory labor for the proprietor.
