MACMURDO: A modification of MacMurdoch, in Gaelic Mac Mhurchaidh, for which See under Murdoch. The name appears originally in Kintyre and Arran, and in late sixteenth century in Dumfriesshire. Evarus (Ivar) Makmurthe was a tenant in Kintyre, 1506 (ER., XII, p. 699). Robert Makmerdie was retoured heir of John Makmuidie in Dunscoir, his father, in the lands of Cubbentoun and Ferdene-Makcrerie, "nunc vulgo vocatis Makmurdestoun," 1602 (Retours, Dumfries, 15). M'Murdie of Killilego in the parish of Dunskoir is in record, 1675 (ibid., 276). M'Murday 1565. The name is also Englished Murdochson and Murdoson. "The family of M'Murdo can be traced back for a considerable period, being connected with the parish of Dunscore, and giving name to the property of M'Murdiston... There is a charter from the commendator of Melrose, dated 25th July 1565, to William M'Merday and his heirs, of the lands of M'Cubbingstoun and Ferdin-Makrary (possibly Farding-Makrary)" (Ramage, p. 66).
