MACMORRAN, Macmorrin: From Old Gaelic mugh-ron 'seal's slave, ' from mug 'slave' (Zeuss, Grammatica Celtica, 2. ed., p. 270), and ron 'seal. ' Mugron, comharb of Columcille in Ireland and Scotland, died in 979 (AFM. ). John McMoryne witnessed a charter by Robert de Graham of lands in Kyle to Melrose Abbey, c. 1344 (Melros, p. 427), and Alan McMoryn witnessed the resignation by Sir David de Wemyss of certain lands in 1373 (Wemyss, II, p. 15). William M'Moryne was tenant under the Douglas in the barony of Buittle, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lx), and Maurice Macmoryn who was rector there, died in 1381 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 556). William MacMorin (wrongly 'de' MacMorin in the record), lately papal nuncio to the king and realm of Scotland, petitioned in 1395 for the canonry and first prebend of Glasgow (Pap. Pet., I, p. 585). In 1394 his name is recorded as Matuorin (c misread as t), and in 1408 his death is recorded as M'Moyn (ibid., p. 579,636). John M'Moryn appears as witness in Kirkcudbright, 1466 (RMS., II, 907). Herbert McMorane had a remission for certain acts committed by him, 1495 (ALHT., I, p. 215), and Alexander McMoren in Galloway had a respite for "tressonable intercommonyng with Inglismen" in 1529 (RSS., II, 43). William Makmorame, merchant burgess in Edinburgh, 1565 (RPC., I, p. 431), Johnne McMorame was messenger at arms, 1575 (RPC., II, p. 503), Edward Makmorane was retoured heir of Margaret Gordoun, his mother, in the lands of Blakat, 1576 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 36), and John Macmorane appears in Cottoun of Dulleward, 1627 (Brechin). Gillepatrik McMorane appears in Saligo, 1636 (Cawdor, p. 280), MacMorran of Glaspen was Commissioner of Supply for Lanark, 1696 (APS., X, p. 29), and John M'Morin, writer in Dumfries, 1780. The Macmorrans of Mull have nearly all changed to Mackinnon. McKmorran and McMunin 1684, M'Morine 1758, M'Morran 1667, M'Morrane 1592, M'Morrione 1794.
