MACNAIRN, Macnarin: Galwegian surnames, the first of which is evidently a metathesized form of the second, its form having been influenced by the name of the northern county. Cuthbert M'Narne was tenant on the lands of Auchirdilakdy in Dumfriesshire, 1376 (RHM., I, p. liv; II, p. 16). Malcolm M'Nerane is mentioned in 1509 (ALC., 21 July), and Gillecrist Maknerrane was tenant under Stewart of Appin in the same year (Appin Stewarts, p. 193). William M'Nairn had sasine of the Know of Fintalloch in 1761 in Galloway in 1684 the name appears as McKnarin, McKnarrine, McKnrrin, McKnarrie, McNaren, McNarien, McNarin, McNarrine, McNarron, McNearie, and McNearin.
