MACANALLY, Macannally, Macinally: The third spelling is that of a Macfarlane sept in Dumbartonshire, doubtfully said to be from Mae Con Ulaidh, 'son of Cu-Uladh' (hound of Ulidia, East Ulster). In the original text of the Book of the Dean of Lismore (p. 34) is Gilcallum m'ynnolaig, rendered in modern Gaelic text M'an olave, and in English 'son of the chief bard or physician.' It is still found in the form M'Inally (p. 50n). On p. 34 it is spelled M'yn noollew, which is rendered on p. 148 as Mac an ollave. A footnote on p. 148, referring to a poem there, says "the present composition would indicate the author as being one of the celebrated Beatons, physicians and sennachies to Lords of the Isles. There are several of the family whose names were Gilliecallum.".
