MACNACHTAN, Macnauchtan, Macnauchton, Macnaghten, Macnaughtan, Macnaughten, Macnaughton, Macnauton: In Gaelic Mac Neachdainn, 'son of Neachdain, ' the Pictish Nechtan, q. v. Gillecrist Mac Nachtan granted the church of Kelmurkhe (Kilmorich) in 1247 to the Abbey of Inchaffray (Inchaffray, p. 65). Donald Macnachtane, son of an unmarried nobleman and an unmarried woman, was dean of Dunkeld in 1431 (Pap. Lett., VIII, p. 368,628). Sir Duncan McNachtan was dean of Dunkeld in 1438 (Athole, p. 707), and Donald McNachtan, crown tenant of Eddergoll, 1480 (Christie, p. 84). Schir Maureis McNauchtane was vicar of Inchedin in 1510 (Mocgregor, I, p. 84). Donald Macnachtane, rector of Weem (Pap. Lett., IX), Alexander Maknachtan of Dounderaw signed the earl of Argyll's letters of fire and sword against Clan Gregor in 1565 (BBT., p. 212), and was a witness at Garvie, 1569 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 184), John McNauchtane of Dundarrow and Duncan McNauchtane, his brother, were charged in 1596 with violence to Dame Jeane, Lady Ardkinglas (RPC., V, p. 322). John MacNachtan of Dunderaw witnessed a commission by the earl of Argyll, 1598 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 75), and Alister M'Nachtane of Dindaraw was admitted burgess of Glasgow gratis in 1614 (Burgesses). As late as 1627 Colonel Alexander MacNaughten raised a company of two hundred Highland bowmen for service in the expedition to France for the relief of La Rochelle.
