MACNEILAGE, Macneiledge: A corruption of M'Nelis or M'Nelus, from MacNiallghuis, 'son of Niallghus, ' i. e. 'champion choice' (niall + gus). A Dumbartonshire name mostly. Cristin M'Nelos witnessed a Lamont charter in 1465 (Lamont, p. 19).-McNellus was one of the 'wrychtis' engaged by Sir George Calbrathe in 1494 (ALHT., I, p. 246), and in 1500 a trial was held for the slaughter of Gillaspy McNelus or M'Neluse (RSS., I, 480; Trials, I, p. 100). Archibald McNelluss witnessed sasine at Larichlyssagnicht, 1515, and Milmore Mc nelos was charter witness at Ferlings, 1525 (HP., IV, p. 25). Archibald McNelus was miller at Campsaill in 1598 (RPC., V, p. 452), Donald M'Nilladge in Kilfinan parish is in record in 1695 (Argyll), Gilbert M'Neilladge was burgess of Rothesay in 1663 (Isles), and Daniel M'Nilage is recorded in Paisley, 1749 (Kilbarchan). M'Neilas 1663, McNeillas 1678, Macneilledge 1816.
