MACNEILLIE, Macnillie, Macneilly, Macnelly: A Galloway surname. Probably from Irish Mac an Fhileodh or Mac an Fhilidh, 'son of the poet file, a name almost peculiar to N. E. Ulster-(Woulfe). Duncan M'Nely was a witness in Wigtownshire, 1426 (RMS., II, 185). A composition was made with Ranald Maknely in Galloway, 1473 (ALHT., I, p. 9). James M'Neillie was retoured heir of Adam M'Neillie of Auchairne in Carrick, 1671 (Retours, Ayr, 572), and Thomas McNeillie appears in Ayr, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 672). McKneillie 1686. In 1684 (Parish) spelled: McNielie, McKnilie, McKnily, McNaall, McNeelie, McNili, McNilli, McNillie, McNily, and McNyly. Now often shortened to Neil in Galloway.
