MACNIDER, Macnidder, Macniter: Gaelic Mac an fhigheadair, 'son of the weaver. ' Matho M'Nedyr was burgess of Ayr, 1471 (Friars Ayr, p. 53), and John Makneddar resigned certain annual rents to the Friars Preachers of Ayr, 1515 (ibid., p. 78). Three Maknedars, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). John McNettar, fisherman in Inverness, 1557 (Rec. Inv., p. 8), John M'Knedar, clerk of Glasgow diocese, 1567 (Friars Ayr, p. 106); and John McKnedar, notary in Prestwick, 1575 (Prestwick, p. 77), may be the John McKnedar, burgess of Ayr in 1585, who appears as cautioner for Oswald McKnedar in £200 (RPC., III, p. 723,732). A McNoder in Strogarne was summoned to answer a charge of violence and robbery in 1592 (RPC., V, p. 28). McCoull VcNeter in Strathfellen was one of a number who aided the Macgregors at Glenfruin and Glenfinlas (Irving, Dumbartonshire, p. 227). John McNedar in Mayboll, 1604, and Alexander McNedar in Drumnoir. Ayrshire, 1608 (RPC., VII, p. 548; VIII, p. 671). The name is probably extinct in Scotland, but it occurs in Canada and the United States. Hanford McNider was unsuccessful nominee for the Presidency of the United States in 1932. In some cases the surname has probably been changed to its English equivalent, Weaver. M'Nedair 1589.
